District Water Info

In 2016, the Ministry of Education mandated lead testing in schools built before 1990. With guidance from the Fraser Health Authority, the Abbotsford School District completed this testing in 2016 and with the support of a Ministry of Education grant, was able to replace and repair piping at the affected schools.

Since 2017, water samples continue to be collected on a rotating 3-year basis, with test results conducted and reported by an accredited, independent laboratory. The school district shares these results with the Ministry of Education and the Fraser Health Authority.

In March 2019, Health Canada lowered the maximum acceptable concentration of lead in drinking water from 0.010 mg/L to 0.005 mg/L. As a result, some school sites now exceed this current maximum acceptable concentration.

The Abbotsford School District will be bringing in an accredited, independent laboratory to test all of the failed sites to accurately pin-point the water sources that now show lead levels above this new allowable limit.

District staff will be taking action at each of the affected school sites to ensure the drinking water for students and staff are only available from fountains and sinks with water quality meeting health standards.

Additional updates will be available on the district website.
