Hansen Takes on Network Green

Three Rick Hansen students have been selected to represent Abbotsford youth at the Network Green Pop Up Lab.  With a total of 9 candidates selected, Rick Hansen Secondary as taken 1/3rd  or 3 out of 9 seats at the table to voice and work towards a greener future.  Congratulations to Angela Nguyen, Mridul Norhria, and Gurkeerit Braich

Network Green brings together a small group of youth passionate about the environment and sustainability from across Abbotsford to develop projects that address some of the most pressing sustainability challenges facing the community.  This RBC Future Launch Community Challenge is supported by the RBC Foundation and Abbotsford Community Foundation.

Network Green is a popup lab where local youth will work on the concrete design and implementation of projects that address sustainability challenges across the City of Abbotsford. Using design thinking principles, these projects will focus on:

  • §  Climate Change
  • §  Waste Diversion
  • §  Air Quality

Network Green’s mission is to empower and assist youth in tackling environmental challenges in Abbotsford.

Communities face complex environmental challenges, and youth continue to be critical voices in shaping solutions to deal with the climate crisis.

Abbotsford is one of the fastest growing communities in Canada, and it faces numerous ecological challenges. Given that Abbotsford is the largest agricultural community in Canada, the impacts of climate change would have a significant impact on the community at large. Additionally, Abbotsford is in the Fraser Valley of which air quality concerns are acutely relevant. Youth taking an active role in dealing with these challenges will lead to better outcomes for all of Abbotsford, particularly the youth who call this place home.

We are excited for our Rick Hansen students to tackle the complex challenges that face the Abbotsford community in the years ahead.  Here’s a little background on each of our all-star students:

My name is Angela, I am an achieving student at Rick Hansen Secondary School. If I were to describe myself in 3 words, it would be determined since I have multiple goals that I try to achieve regardless of the obstacles, hardworking as I always try to the best of my ability, and extroverted since I’m always open to communicating. I like to play rugby, listen to music, and hang out with my friends. I love trying new things and I hope to become a dentist in the future.

I am Mridul Nohria. I am a grade-10 student at Rick Hansen and part of the student leadership program where I study and help the school with things like preparing events, decorations and making the school the best it can be. Apart from school and leadership, I am also part of things like maths and debate club. I am also a professional skater and swimmer. My goal is to be the best astrophysicist and solve all the mysteries that no one else could. My hobbies are reading books and looking into different research on space. I also love maths and science, especially physics. I was the top maths and IT student in Grade-9. I love dogs and the night sky

Gurkeerit Braich is a hard-working straight-A student who is dedicated to those around them whilst making sure that work gets done. He has participated in many extracurricular activities involving leadership and the community. He is a good fit in group-based activities and has experienced it trying to figure out solutions for the Climate Change crisis.
