Rick Hansen Secondary School of Business

Rick Hansen Secondary is excited to offer a School of Business option for interested students. This is a unique opportunity for senior students to specialize in business as they work towards graduation. A one of a kind program in the province of British Columbia, this school allows students to take advantage of targeted training, internships and university credits. Designed to propel students from a text based format to a practical, problem solving, connected classroom, this program will provide students with a significant advantage over a traditional classroom setting.

The School of Business takes a project based learning approach where students solve real world problems and develop connections with experts in the industry. Combining courses into a hybrid model not only lets students see the connections between courses but also the connections to the world of business at a provincial, national, and international level. The School of Business has developed purposeful internships that exposed students to careers they are interested in before they set their sights on post-secondary opportunities. Internships are not only a vehicle for career exploration but also serve to cement classroom learning with the practical application of content. They allow students, at a young age, to build a network of industry contacts crucial for success in the competitive marketplace. Along with internships, students have the ability to take advantage of international studies and travel abroad. The world is no longer governed by nationalistic growth strategies and it is imperative that students begin to understand the complex nature of business in a global marketplace. To cap off the School of Business, students will be provided the opportunity to take two university courses at Corpus Christi University while being supported by a teacher at Rick Hansen. This allows students to get advance university credit, at the same time as being purposefully transitioned from a high school learner to a successful university student.

The School of Business at Rick Hansen Secondary has been designed in consultation with industry experts from our School of Business advisory panel. This diverse group of individuals has provided their market and post-secondary expertise to ensure the School of Business provides opportunities for students to excel in their chosen career paths and in their post-secondary studies.

This is a high level business school and students will be required to apply. Applications will be screened for propensity for academic success, extra-curricular involvement and how students contribute to the school community. Students at Rick Hansen have an elevated placement status compared to their peers from across the province who will be applying.

Rick Hansen Secondary School of Science

The Rick Hansen Secondary School of Science is an opportunity for academic, university driven students to excel in the sciences giving them a leg up on the competition at post-secondary institutions. This innovative program was one of the reasons Rick Hansen Secondary has been designated as a School of Innovation by the Ministry of Education.

Students applying to the School of Science will have the advantage of understanding the theoretical concepts of the senior sciences at the same time as they are combined with the practical application of these theories. This creates a unique learning environment where students can see the application of knowledge and not ask the ever frustrating question of “When am I ever going to use this?”. By making the teaching, learning standards and application of knowledge so explicit, students’ understanding grows in leaps and bounds. The School of Science is designed to enhance the rate of learning at a rate beyond the standard classroom setting. By combining courses into a super hybrid model students are propelled along an accelerated learning path that connects the classroom learning with real world experiences. This combined with an internship structure, allows students to gain an understanding of the fluid nature of class content and practical applications. Our goal is to allow students to investigate careers they are interested in before committing to a path they are unsure of. Informed decision making is one of the hallmarks of allowing students to develop a career goal they are passionate about.

There is also an opportunity for students to combine an internship with international study. Studying science with a cross cultural connection in an international environment exposes students to new ways of thinking and understanding, deepening their knowledge network and facilitating an advanced learning experience. The School of Science has worked extremely hard to coordinate university level courses for students in their final year of study. This is crucial in ensuring that students have a successful transition to university and understand the requirements to be successful while still receiving high school support.
